I guess the TV series really increase popularity of the manhwa. Back to the time when MegKF and Korean-Manhwa picked the project after JanimeS dropped it, there were hardly anyone reading it. But now it's mentioned in many forums.
There's another news though I'm not sure if it's good or bad. I can finally confirm Goong is LICENSED. A few months ago, there were some rumours about this. Back then, I saw Goong was available for pre-order in a online bookstore. Its publisher, ICE Kunion was completely unknown so I thought it was some joke. It's the real thing though. For those interested, its website link is http://www.icekunion.com/ If I remember correctly, volume 1 was supposed to be available in June and I will definitely put my hands on one.

  • There are a some reasons I like this manhwa. Both the manhwa and its drama version have characteristics of Korean melodrama. Goong has a nice balance between humour and drama. The jokes are quite funny and for raising the mood other than spoiling the drama part. In my opinion, romance in Goong is one of the best I've ever read. To be honest, I don't like the "love at first sight" plot. Such plots normally are too easy to predict that it's more enjoyable to find out how much you can guess than to read the story itself. All has cool and too-perfect-to-be-true characters. If it is shoujo, it'll be the girl keeps chasing a guy. He is most probably either a model student or a look-like-deliquent. He also like the heroine from the start but he only let her know after hearing her confession or helping her out of serious troubles. The girl'll normally see his unexpected sides, sometimes hearing about his dark past. She also have to face his admirers or ex-girlfriends, and keep doubting if she's good enough for him and "do my best to be suitable for him". Then there'll be some guys chasing her, which forces the hero to do something, mostly beat them up and/or say something like "I'll kill you if you touch her". There are also dirty tricks, misunderstandings, transfer students, cross-dressing, etc. In case of shounen manga, it'd be some beautiful girls chasing an overly shy and stupid guy and that guy won't confess to the girl he like until the end. If I keep listing, it'll be enough to write "Writing Manga Manual" :P. Although following the "forced marriage, they eventually love each other and mostly living happily ever after" plot, Goong is less predictable and quite good in subtle details. Chae Gyung's love for Shin is quite reallistic in certain aspect. In the manhwa, I remembered she told Yul the reason she loved Shin is that because she feels lonely in the palace, she would fall for anyone showing her just a little care and that someone just happened to be Shin. She also said that she would even fall for Yul if he was in Shin's place. In later part, she added something also mentioned in the drama, "You know how cold Shin is. That is why I feel pity him. And when I pity him, I begin to understand him. And as much as I understand him, I become to like him." And for Shin, it started with Chae Gyung asking what his dream is. It just happens to be my view of love. It begins and ends with fate but I prefer a plain and down-to-earth phrase, "right timing". Speaking of fate, it reminds me of lines from Rough(by Misuru Adachi), "Coincidence piling up... That's fate." And Love is selfish, unreasonable and grows deeper out of understanding. A lasting love must be built on mutual understanding as Myuki told Masato , her brother(at the end marries her), "If I marry you, onii-chan, we would probably get along well. Because I already know your good and bad points" (Miyuki by Adachi again). Shin and Chae Gyung like each other because they can see the other's bad points. Shin is not a prince on a white horse but "a big jerk" and "an animal". While Chae Gyung is "stupid" and "a girl drooling on someone else's back". The way the story starts is really amazing. Who can expect a girl to see her soon-to-be-husband proposing to another girl and get rejected? The story is pretty unpredictable due to some twists the author managed to introduce although it seemed to follow a typical plot in recent volumes.
