  • Sakuragi Hanamichi the holder of an awesome 50 girl rejections, arrives at Shohoku. He befriends a girl, Akagi Haruko. Haruko asks Hanamichi 'Do you like Basketball?'. Without a thought Hanamichi replies 'I love it. I am a sportsman.' Eager to make Haruko happy he goes on a crash training schedule, and gets so motivated that he runs into the 3rd year block. This doesn't go well with the 3rd year bad boys and a challenge is immediately laid down to Hanamichi. To add to his problems, Hanamichi learns that Haruko has a crush on another person, Kaede Rukawa. Fate seems to be playing games with Hanamichi for Rukawa, is taking a nap at the designated fighting ground (the roof top), and is rudely awakened by the 3rd year bad boys. Before Hanamichi arrives to fight the 3rd years, Rukawa has already finished them off. Hanamichi starts off on bad grounds with Rukawa and Haruko spots them on the roof top. Running to stop Hanamichi she arrives only to find Rukawa already injured. NOTE the injuries are from fighting the 3rd years, Hanamichi hasn't even started. Misinterpreting this as Hanamichi's doing, she says 'At first I didn't believe my friends that you are as bad as the rumors say. But I see that you are a person who resorts to violence. I HATE YOU.' Hanamichi gets so dejected that he contemplates suicide from the rooftop, thankfully his friends [ Yohei, Anozumi, Ookusu, and Sauichiro - also known as Sakuragi's Guntai (Sakuragi's Army) ] explain to Haruko that it is all a misunderstanding. One problem solved but another is just round the corner, Hanamichi has got himself into more trouble. The loss of Haruko has led him to hate basketball and unfortunately, annoy the very big Captain of Shohoku's basketball team. Everyone, including Rukawa, goes to see the match between Hanamichi and the Captain. Unknowing to Hanamichi, the captain is brother to Haruko, Takenori Akagi. Hanamichi wins Akagi with his naturally born athleticism and a powerful slam dunk (taught by Haruko) and is very shocked to learn that Akagi is Haruko's brother. Not content with just winning Akagi , Hanamichi tries to win Akagi's permission to join the Basketball team. With much effort and patience, he finally gets permission to join. But joining is one matter, actually playing on the team is another. Because Hanamichi is an amateur, he has to start off with the basics under the supervision of Ayako. Rukawa is a professional basketball player before he has even joined Shohoku, so he doesn't have to do basics. A week passes and Hanamichi is still doing basics. Ayako then tells Hanamichi that if he wants to play, he has to be able to handle the ball. But with a grasp which is beyond belief, he masters the ball handling skill with speed and ease. But Akagi denies him the right to play with the rest of the team. Hanamichi has had enough and leaves.

  • Hanamichi in the heat of the moment left the Basketball team. Akagi is disappointed by Hanamichi's lack of perseverance. In a café, Hanamichi is accompanied by his friends but lacks the appetite to eat. In his mind the words of Akagi loom constantly 'No perseverance!'. Ookusu notices a bunch of dropouts, from another school, who are make rude gestures at them. Unknowingly Hanamichi tags along with his friends and end up face to face with the dropouts. One of them remark about Hanamichi's bad choice of hair color and is floored by a kick in the groin (by Hanamichi). He leaves his friends (Sakuragi Guntai) to finish off the rest of the bunch. Guilt leads Hanamichi to go back to the gym. With help from Ayako and Kiminobu Kogure, Akagi is persuaded to let Hanamichi go one stage further in his basics to ball passing training. Rukawa is most popular with the girls in Shohoku, in fact a fan club has been made. These three girls shamelessly cheer Rukawa, he on the other hand gives them little notice. A fat old man walks into the gym. Hanamichi doesn't know the identity of this man and gives the man a lecture about fitness and proceeds to stretch the chin and stomach of the man. Akagi knuckles Hanamichi for disrespect to Anzei sensei. Ayako tells Hanamichi that Anzei sensei was once a player of the All Japan Basketball team. Anzei sensei has already organized a match against Ryonan, but before that he would like to see a practice match, 1st years Versus 2nd and 3rd years. Obviously the highlight of the match is the challenge between Akagi and Rukawa. Hanamichi isn't sufficiently skilled enough to play (only one week's training) and ends up on the side line watching. The captivating performance of Rukawa entrances Haruko. Hanamichi has had enough, he cannot stand the way Rukawa is showing off and goes about trying to get himself in the match. In the end he manages to get his way, with help from Kogure and Anzai sensei. Akagi doesn't understand why everyone is helping Hanamichi. There is only 5 minutes when Hanamichi joins the game, one reason for letting him in is that he will not have really enough time to cause any trouble and also it will be good experience for him. With explosive speed he manages to grab the ball and drive his way to the where Akagi stands. Everyone is surprised at how fast Hanamichi is progressing, his ball control is not that of a beginner. Akagi isn't going to let Hanamichi score so easily and goes to defend. However Hanamichi's slam dunk misses the ring and slams on Akagi's head. Akagi lies motionless on the floor much to Hanamichi's horror. Akagi gets up and is furious and goes about throttling Hanamichi. The next day Aota Tasuika from the Judo department is interested in Hanamichi. He wants Hanamichi to join the Judo department and tries to persuade Hanamichi using Haruko's photographs. But Hanamichi doesn't join, Aota asks why, the only reason he joined the Basketball team is due to the fact that Haruko is there. Hanamichi in reply says 'I want to play Basketball because I am a Basketball player.'

  • Aota's attempt to make Hanamichi join the Judo team fails, but unknowing to Hanamichi and Awuta is that some other people are watching from the outside. Namely Akagi, Kogure, and Ayako. What Hanamichi said ' I want to play Basketball because I am a Basketball player.' brings on a great change in Akagi. Akagi goes about training with renewed vigor. Another surprise is Akagi asks Anzai sensei to allow Hanamichi to learn how to shoot. Akagi's request left Hanamichi in shock. Anyway Rukawa is called to demonstrate the simple 'Up lay shot'. Hanamichi isn't interested in Rukawa performing the shot and tries to sabotage the attempt. When it comes to his turn he manages to mess up each attempt, but still he doesn't want Rukawa to give another demonstration. In the end Hanamichi throws a ball at Rukawa' head to stop Rukawa performing. His excuse ' Oophs the ball suddenly slipped'. Rukawa does the same and says the ball slipped out of his hand. Then with feinted apology to Rukawa, an unbelievable concept coming from Hanamichi, Rukawa is willing to demonstrate again. However Hanamichi gets the Basketball bin and drops all the balls on Rukawa, then repeatedly hitting Rukawa on the head with Basketballs. Rukawa gets mad and retaliates. Soon the Basketball bin is thrown high in the air and lands on Akagi. Hence the likeness of a Gorilla behind bars. Both Rukawa and Hanamichi have been stopped practice, and Hanamichi is not allowed further time to practice shooting. The next morning Haruko is running and sees someone in the local Basketball area. It is Hanamichi practicing the 'Up Lay shot' , but with little success. Haruko assists and tells Hanamichi how she has learnt to shoot. With distasteful reminders of Rukawa's performance, Hanamichi finally learns how to shoot. (Rukawa has been in the bushes during their practice and has seen how Hanamichi succeeds. Rukawa seems to always go to this local Basketball area to practice, but Hanamichi and Haruko arrives first, hence he is waiting in the bushes for them to leave.) In the gym, Akagi is scornful at Hanamichi's success, whilst Kogure is complementing Hanamichi's achievement. As night falls Hanamichi is left alone to practice by himself. Hikoichi Aida (scout from Ryonan) arrives to gather information about Rukawa and meets up with Hanamichi. On first impression Hikoichi mistook him for Rukawa, then if not Rukawa it must be Akagi. Hanamichi isn't impressed with each remark and gives Hikoichi a lump on the head each time. Hikoichi learns that Hanamichi is the next captain of Shohoku (boasting on Hanamichi's part) and that he has even defeated Akagi. On the other hand Hanamichi learns of Ryonan's ace player Sendo Akira and their captain Uozumi Jun. The next day after training, Akagi calls Hanamichi to stay behind. Akagi wants to teach Hanamichi about getting the REBOUNDS. Hanamichi learns from Akagi that 'The person who controls the Rebounds, controls the progress of the game.' The scene shifts to the day when Shohoku is going against Ryonan. On the train, the passengers are alerted to the height of Akagi, Rukawa and Hanamichi. What's more, Akagi wants the entire team to warm up on the train, by lifting up their backsides 1cm off the seat. Arriving at Ryonan, Hanamichi starts by shouting his objective ' I am going to defeat Sendo'. This surprises everyone in the gym, and Akagi hits Hanamichi for being ill-mannered. Ryonan's coach Moichi Taoka goes to greet Anzei sensei. In the locker room, Anzai sensei gives the starting 5 and positions they play. Hanamichi learns much to his distress that he isn't on the starting 5. A ruckus ensues, but Anzai sensei says the reason for him not being on the starting 5 is that he wants him to be his secret weapon. At those words Hanamichi calms down and even ends up getting Rukawa's designated shirt number 10, Rukawa ends up getting 11. In the gym, Taoka sensei is having a fit over Sendo's apparent lateness. At that moment, Sendo arrives out of breathe. He has overslept and has run all the way from home. Hanamichi goes to greet Sendo. His words are 'I am secret weapon Sakuragi Hanamichi. I will defeat you Sendo.' At what he says, Sendo smiles and shakes Hanamichi's hand.

  • The match between Shohoku and Ryonan begins. Uozumi shows off the result of his training by stopping both Akagi and Rukawa from scoring. (In the past competition Uozumi has been unable to score even a point from Akagi. The fact which hurts him most is that Akagi is smaller than him. In the end Ryonan won that match, but the fact still remained. Uozumi lost to Akagi. Since that day, Uozumi has trained himself so that he can repay the insult). Ryonan's coach, Miochi Taoka, is fueling his team by wishing to have a 30 point lead, but Hanamichi, who is a substitute, sneakily goes behind Miochi and 'makes a point' up his backside. With Uozumi stopping all Shohoku's attack, Ryonan's ace, Sendoh, is equally successful with the offense. Rukawa who is marking Sendoh is unable to see through Sendoh's tactics and is always being fooled. Soon the score is 19 to 0 against Shohoku. Sendoh's great performance captivates his team and also brings up the fighting spirit within Akagi and Rukawa. Ryonan once again on the offense with Sendoh about to perform a 'Mid Air Dunk'. Out of nowhere Rukawa appears and snatches the ball away. In the next moment, Rukawa races to score the first point. Sendoh chases and is fooled by Rukawa, Akagi receives the ball and performs his speciality 'Gorilla Dunk'. Now the tide of success is slowly switching over to Shohoku. Akagi is marking Uozumi closely so that he cannot score. Also when it came to the offensive rebound, Akagi is able to steal all of them from Uozumi, so the gap in the score is slowly closing. Rukawa is no slouch and performs a slam dunk to close the gap further. At half time, Moichi is getting angry with his team's performance towards the end of the first half. The strategy is chanced to a 1 to 1 formation. Uozumi marking Akagi, and Sendoh marking Rukawa. Unknowing to Moichi is Hanamichi snooping at the side overhearing the strategy. After a ruckus Akagi manages to get Hanamichi back to their own bench. Sendoh is impressed with Hanamichi. In the next half, Sendoh often glances towards Hanamichi, Hanamichi is enthusiastic at the challenge. But it isn't till Akagi has to be subbed off, because of an injury to his head, that Hanamichi is allowed to play. This being his first match since he has joined the basketball team, brings an unwanted tension within him. He finds himself unable to think about his actions and accidentally injures Uozumi. However help is on the way, Rukawa gives Hanamichi a kick to snap him out of his trance. Uozumi learns from Hikoichi (gather information man from volume 2) that Hanamichi is deputy captain of Shohoku. But what is more unbelievable is that Hanamichi defeated Akagi. Uozumi doesn't believe Hikoichi and gives Hanamichi a direct challenge. As Uozumi is about to score, Hanamichi uses the technique which defeated Akagi. What is know as the 'Huh Huh Huh defense' . (Hanamichi repeatedly jumps up to block off all shooting angles. Effectively forming a wall).

  • Hanamichi's 'Huh Huh Huh defense' manages to block off Uozumi's attack. Ryonan team are surprised at the speed and ability of Hanamichi. Moichi isn't convinced and keeps saying that Hanamichi is only a rookie which cannot affect the outcome of the game. However Moichi soon eats his words for his perception is flawed. With Akagi being off the team, Rukawa is the only person capable of scoring. So Ryonan's defense is tight around Rukawa. But Hanamichi doesn't pass to him and passes the ball to Kogure (3rd year wearing glasses). Without anyone to guard him, Kogure shoots in 3 points. Moichi keeps thinking that Hanamichi will pass to Rukawa, but every time he ends up passing to Kogure. The gap in the score closes. Then another problem arises. The offensive rebounds, not every shot taken by Shohoku is successful. Additionally Ryonan has Uozumi (202 cm) and Sendoh (190cm), which means that Shohoku is at a disadvantage. On the off shot one of the rebounds is gained by Shohoku due to Hanamichi's incredible jumping ability. However Uozumi uses 'screen out' technique to stop Hanamichi from getting any more rebounds. Sadly the gap in the score is widening. At that moment, Akagi returns. Rukawa is subbed off to allow him to regain his breath, Akagi takes his place. He shouts at Hanamichi for such a bad show of getting the rebounds. Hanamichi begins to remember how Akagi has specially trained him to deal with getting rebounds. No sooner another missed shot occurs; with the knowledge this time round, Hanamichi manages to reverse the roles, and block Uozumi from stealing the rebound. Slowly, with Akagi's support, Shohoku starts to gain closer to Ryonan. A sudden turn of events, Kogure shoots in 3 points bringing Shohoku into the lead 77 to 76. At that moment, Sendoh's attitude changes completely, he is going to use 100% concentration. (Sendoh has only being playing leisurely up till now, but when the score is unfavorable he will use his full ability to turn the score around). Hanamichi is to mark Sendoh, but the new Sendoh is more than a match for Hanamichi and in a split moment surges by and scores. Akagi recalls the horror of Sendoh when he is motivated. Hanamichi tries to stop Snedoh again with unbelievable surge of speed, alas it is to no avail. Rukawa having rested is subbed in place of Kogure. Anzai wants to talk to Hanamichi and Rukawa about the new strategy against Sendoh. It requires Hanamichi and Rukawa to both guard against Sendoh. Obviously both protest, but soon end up cooperating. Sendoh is really motivated at this new challenge. Shohoku's chance of winning depends on Hanamichi's and Rukawa's ability to stop Sendoh from scoring. A lapse on Hanamichi's part gives chance for Sendoh to pass to Uozumi who scores. The score now is 85 to 81 against Shohoku.
